Aisha Haung, a Chinese national, was detained in Ghana in 2017 and charged with violating section 99(1) of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), illegally employing other foreign nationals, and violating sections 24 of the Immigration Act and Regulation 18 of the Immigration Regulations. She was also accused of providing mine support services without a valid registration with the Minerals Commission.

At a town hall gathering on April 18, 2018, some senior government officials defended the decision to deport her by claiming that "placing Aisha Haung in jail in Ghana is not going to solve our money problem and it is not going to make us or him (government official) happy."

Subsequently at a  conference at Princeton University on September 20, 2019, President Nana Akuffo Addo called her deportation a mistake and a bad choice. As a result, the investigation and prosecution procedure have been suspended, he said.

Her current re-arrest

Detective Chief Inspector Frederick Sarpong, who represented the prosecutor's facts in court on Friday, 2 September 2022, stated that Aisha Haung had previously escaped prosecution in Accra when she was previously detained, had her identity altered, and then had to return to Ghana to carry out the same criminal offences for which she had earlier escaped prosecution. According to the prosecution, the suspect applied for a Togo visa, crossed into Ghana, and then returned to Ashanti Region for her galamsey activities.

She was detained in Accra with three other Chinese nationals, Jong Li Hua, Huang Jei, and Huiad Hiahu, for illegally selling gold and mining equipment.

Because there was no Chinese interpreter available when she was arraigned last Friday (September 2, 2022), the court presided over by Bright Acquah has not yet heard her plea to these accusations.

Aisha Haung wasn't in court on Monday, September 5, 2022, when the other defendants were arraigned.

They have been kept in prison custody after entering a not guilty plea and are scheduled to return to court on Wednesday, September 14, 2022.
