The Ghana Education Service has been using a model
curriculum for some time, but the necessary learning resources are still
lacking.
This has sparked a lot of discussions on how this curriculum is being implemented in Ghana and around the world in the media. This curriculum was introduced a while back, but finding texts for primary schools to utilize in the classroom proved difficult.
This week;
The distribution of 3.7 million Transition to English (T2E) books and other instructional materials to primary schools in Ghana was led by the Honorable Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Adutwum.
These textbooks are to be distributed to 11,000 schools
to improve reading amongst pupils in lower to upper primary schools.
The materials were acquisitioned by the sponsorship of the USAID which was a part of a nine-year program to help the Education Ministry and the GES in fostering good English grades in Ghana.
The program which is a $96 million from USAID is focused
on four key thematic areas namely;
●
T2E
plus programme
●
Early
grade reading
●
T2E
phase one
●
National
radio reading programme.
The main goals of this initiative are to improve
teaching and learning in Ghana, raise English literacy levels, and promote
students' motivation to read and talk in classrooms there.
On Wednesday 30th August at Accra, the Minister Dr Yaw
Adutwum made it known at the event that one of the ministry's key objectives is
to make sure that basic schools have access to the required teaching and
learning resources to establish a continuous pathway from early childhood to
senior high and college levels. In his speech, he said;
“These books are going to the public schools of our
nation and this is how we bring an equitable educational system where those in
the private sector get the opportunity but we don't leave out those in the
public sector”.
“More have gone, some are on the way and today these
ones are going to leave here for the classroom. When students return to school,
they are going to see more textbooks”, he said.
In conclusion, the minister Dr. Yaw Adutwum appreciated the USAID’s partnership which has enhanced the bond between Ghana and the US and acknowledged how the US cares about Ghana
